Developer: AKI This game has unused graphics. |
OK, nearly there. Back to PJ64, Click FileChoose rom directory. Find where you saved the No Mercy Rom and click Ok. WWF No Mercy should have appeared in the white box. Double click WWF No Mercy, the game will load. One thing youll probably want to do once you start the game is turn off the camera in the options menu. The best place to get cheats, codes, cheat codes, hints, tips, tricks, and secrets for the Nintendo 64 (N64). Strategy Guide Custom Wrestler Clones. Infinite continues. WWF course, chapter 10-3 Shane McMahon: Intercontinental course, chapter 9-4.
This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion. Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article? |
This needs some investigation. Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page. Specifically: The US manual shows a 'Records' mode not available in the game, and a Smackdown Mall option named 'Debug'. Are there leftovers? http://www.gamesdatabase.org//Media/SYSTEM/Nintendo_N64/Manual/formated/WWF_No_Mercy_-_2000_-_THQ,_Inc..pdf |
Do you smell what the Rick is cookin'? No, no you probably don't...
- 1Unused Championship Mode Path
- 2Unused Face Textures
Unused Championship Mode Path
The game was supposed to have Transfer Pak functionality to take your created wrestler in the Game Boy Color version and place him in the Nintendo 64 version. Once the GBC version was cancelled, the mode was dummied out, but it's still accessible with a couple of simple steps.
First, input GameShark code
Second, go into the Smackdown Mall. Choose 'Clone Superstar' and clone it to the 'Data 512' slot, which is in the newly-opened 'Superstars 6' group. Now the mode will be accessible in Championship Mode.
Listed as 'No Mercy Game Boy Color' in the Championship menu, it consists of eight matches. There are no branching paths, and your player character plays no role in the plot.
The story starts out with you being introduced by The Rock as an exciting fresh new face. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon interrupt, and introduce the plot: you have to win a series of matches before facing Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship. Your character then interjects with the single bit of dialogue that they will utter within the entire campaign, and the rest of it takes place as backstage dialogues between Hunter/Stephanie and (generally) your upcoming opponent.
Matches:
Dean Malenko
Tazz (Submission match)
Taka
Shane McMahon
Angle (has pre-match dialogue)
Benoit (Cage match)
X-Pac & Road Dogg (2 vs. 1 Handicap, Rock interferes)
Triple H (Ironman match, 10 minutes)
Winning the Championship results in a message that your Game Boy Color character is now playable on your N64 No Mercy cart.
This mode was fully written, and seems to take advantage of the fact that it can tell a unique story without involving the player character. In every other Championship mode, the opposite is the case, necessary for getting Attitude Era catchphrases and the like in. Opponents are all completely in-character, at least inasmuch as No Mercy portrayed them - Angle's cutscenes involve plenty of 'It's true,' for example. Some of the cutscenes, most notably Taka's and the one that comes after the Handicap Match, are fairly humorous as well.
Unlike other Championships, there is no title defense secondary story path - your Game Boy Color character would get saved into an open slot, and that's it.
Unused Text
Starting at 0x144354 in the ROM is text that was going to be used for this mode. Of note is that there's quite a few typos.
Unused Face Textures
Big Show
Big Show was taken off television during the development of WWF No Mercy, so he was taken out of the game's roster. However, using GameShark code 8029729E 0003 (or just setting the aforementioned address to 03 in a hex editor), his face can be accessed as a texture in the Wrestler Edit mode. The name of the face will show up as RROR (for ERROR), but will be available as normal.
If you wish to change the face at a later time, you will either have to change it in a hex editor or GameShark, wipe the character, or clone over the character.
The Rock
Several different versions of The Rock's face exist between the digits 77-7B. Oddly enough, two are normal, two have a raised eyebrow, and the 7B face only has a palette for the brightest skin color setting. In addition, no hair properly works with it. It's quite possible that one was an early placeholder.
Unused Sounds
The US manual shows a 'Records' option on the comissioner section of the main menu, along with a screenshot; it was used to see the number of matches, wins, loses, draws and win percentage of all wrestlers just like it was in the previous game, Virtual Pro-Wrestling 2. In this game, there is no Records menu in the final, leaving this sound unused.
Full Entrances
Every wrestler had full entrances in WWF WrestleMania 2000, however, this game, during development, was intended to have full entrances for each wrestler, but they were cut for unknown reason, or either because they were glitchy or because of the cartridge space.
Regional Differences
The European version fixed the save glitch present in other versions and awkwardly removed visible blood as well, even though first blood matches and animations for reacting to bloodshed remained.

I've written an article about the handling of face textures in the various AKI Corporation wrestling games. You can read it here.
VPW Studio Official Website Opens [April 24th, 2020 / 20:02]The official VPW Studio website is now open, though the program is still not available. The website mainly exists because I don't want to keep repeating the reasons the program isn't available yet. It's still being worked on, and will be available at some point. I don't know when, though. Don't ask me.
RagDas presents: WCW/nWo REVENJI [February 10th, 2020 / 20:00]RagDas has been working on a hack of WCW/nWo Revenge using VPW Studio, and now a release is available.
More information is available at the hack's website.
Virtual Pro-Wrestling 2 freem Edition 2020/01/28 Release [January 20th, 2020 / 14:23]20 YEARS VIRTUAL PRO-WRESTLING 2
I can't think of any better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of AKI Corporation's masterwork professional wrestling video game than releasing a new update of VPW2 freem Edition.
This release of the hack is estimated to be about 35%-40% complete. You can obtain it from the hack's website.
Back from 'Break' [April 3, 2019 / 15:45]Shortly after the 2019/02/22 release of VPW2 freem Edition, I needed to take a break from AKI-related hacking and projects. I'm pleased to announce that this break is now over, and a few things are happening:
Wwf No Mercy Rom Download
- Work has resumed on VPW Studio. I have written a case study on how the program has helped me throughout the project, as well as things that it couldn't help me with... This isn't public yet, but it is good to have a concrete list of issues that need to be dealt with. Randymanfoo has submitted a lot of changes to the No Mercy FileTableDB, which is good for all the No Mercy hackers. There is still no known release date because the program is not user-friendly enough and lacking in documentation. If I have to spend my time helping people out with problems, that leaves me less development time, so I would rather get the program to a state where people don't have to bother me for everything. :P
- I've undertaken a new project: translating Virtual Pro-Wrestling 64 to English. Unlike VPW2 freem Edition, this will be a straight translation, with no major changes. Two patches will be made: 'fake names' and 'real names'. (The officially licensed wrestlers will retain their real names in both patches.) I do not have a time frame for this project, since there are a few challenges to deal with.
While it is not the current focus, a few of the contributors to VPW2 freem Edition have sent me some updated textures. VPW2 freem Edition is not canceled, but the next update is likely to be a few months out.
Virtual Pro-Wrestling 2 freem Edition 2019/02/22 Preview Release [February 21, 2019 / 13:58]Virtual Pro-Wrestling 2 freem Edition 2019/02/22 preview version has now been released. Check out the hack site for more details and a download.
Virtual Pro-Wrestling 2 freem Edition 2019/01/28 Preview Release [January 28, 2019 / 01:30]19 YEARS VIRTUAL PRO-WRESTLING 2
Virtual Pro-Wrestling 2 freem Edition 2019/01/28 preview version has now been released. Check out the hack site for more details and a download.
Virtual Pro-Wrestling 2 freem Edition Website Opens [November 30, 2018 / 18:48]Well... if VPW Studio is going to be a tool for hacking the games, it stands to reason that there'd be a hack created to test the tool...
Virtual Pro-Wrestling 2 freem Edition is that hack. Sadly, it's not complete yet, so you'll have to wait a bit longer for something you can actually play.
Returning Home [April 6, 2018 / 10:42]I'm finally returning home to VPW after all these years. To be honest, I've been back at work since February 2018. Most of my time has been spent working on a new program for ROM hacking the various VPW games, called 'VPW Studio'. I have no idea when it will be ready for the public to use, but it will likely take a while. Until then, please be patient.
- Teaming up with WldFb: IT IS OVER NOW BITCHES, TIME FOR ALL VPW GAMES TO GET HACKED TO PIECES
- Archiving and Integrating Hacker's Club Posts into my giant VPW archive: Well, JamStubb's site doesn't have everything, so I'm trying to find all the interesting shit at Hacker's Club that I would consider useful. (Attires, some matches, weapons, and most move hacks aren't as useful to me [considering I am trying to completely document the internal workings of the six N64 VPW games as fully as possible]; addresses of things and offbeat bullshit codes work nicely, though.)
Also, I will probably release a zip/rar/7z/whatever of the content I save so that everyone can use it. Eventually I may go back and rip attires/move hacks/etc. but I don't want the stupid off-topic drama and 'retirement' posts. (lol at people getting bored of No Mercy after a year; I'm playing VPW2 on my N64 almost every day at this point, game still holds up 9 years later.) - Toki2s in VPW2: Seriously, I am tracing through the ASM and it takes forever just to write to where I want it to...
357571 lines in (including whitespace and related commentary). Right now, it's not a high priority because of how evil VPW2 is with data. - Arenas in VPW2:
DOOMSDAY EWF did some good work, but he sure as hell didn't cover everything. My documents have data on the other parts of each VPW2 arena, labeled as I figure out what the hell they are. Still looking for those damn movements.Perhaps more had been done than previously thought, but I don't remember any of those documents referencing object counts/pointers to locations which can be helpful for advanced hackers... - Arenas in Revenge:
Hahaha this would be nice. Currently, I only have the arena stages somewhat mapped out. That's more than we had before, though. :DDOOMSDAY EWF did it a long time ago, found it on Hacker's Club. Will repost along with my stage values when the time comes. (proper credit will be given duh)
and it turns out sskilla hacked some of the stage addys already as well. :/ - MultiToki: Gets the address of any set of Toki1/2(/3?) modifiers, given a move value. The Toki1 finders for specific games below are prototypes of this technology; the final version will be an all-N64 VPW games-in-one tool.
- Various World Tour things: This involves finding various things in v1.1 (for my use) and finding/porting the addresses for other versions of World Tour. The costume locations are the first thing to get ported to non-v1.1 versions of World Tour.
- VPW64 before the WCW License: After looking through the ID4 values of wrestlers in VPW64 again, I noticed a strange yet familiar pattern...
- VPW Studio - A program for ROM hacking the N64 AKI wrestling games. Not yet available.
- roster.txt
Listing of all characters in every VPW game with IDs. Completed up to (but not including) DJV. For the most part, this list only includes ID4s. ID2s are available for VPW (PS1) and WCW vs. the World. The original file was created before the discovery of ID-2 in VPW games on the N64. - tex2png (early alpha)
C# Program for converting TEX format images (found in RAM/ROM) to PNG. Requires .NET Framework 2.0 if you don't already have it.
